Christian living was never intended to be ruled by our five senses: taste, touch, sight, hearing, and smell. Nor should our lives be ruled by our feelings and emotions. Feelings and emotions are God-given gifts, but I have learned from experience and working with others that feelings and emotions spend a lot of time in bumper cars. I have seen feelings and emotions become doubtful in the presence of truth, and hopeful in the midst of lies. In other words, they drive drunk at times. So, what do we rely on? What can we put our trust in? It’s not a what, it’s a who. We listen for the voice of perfect pitch, and perfect peace, the voice of the Holy Spirit, the voice of truth. The One who always points us to Jesus, the portrait of the invisible God.

The primary reason that a believer’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions are falsely imprisoned is because he or she has cuddled up next to a hybrid gospel. A gospel that is filled with great sorrow and unceasing anguish, and a gospel that is void of life.

Believers can never be exhaustively free in their souls (their minds, wills, and emotions) until they discover that they are perfectly innocent, apart from their performance. Grace contains the power, the ability, the privilege to release believers from the obligation of right and wrong behavior as their measuring stick, or their DNA test results of right standing with the Father. The measuring stick has been snapped in two, thrown into the fire, and the DNA test results will never point to a different father other than God.

Through this message, we remove the tiara of performance that ministers have crowned the bride of Christ with, and we are reminding the bride that she has already been crowned with Papa’s lovingkindness and tender mercies.

Jesus is not the One who is in the state of transformation; you are, I am, we are. Once we come to Christ, our Spirit man needs no further transformation; in the twinkling of an eye, he is made alive and perfect; sealed until the day of redemption. Any transformation that remains takes place is in our soul and body.

For the joy set before Christ Jesus, He endured the cross. Unlike many people, He was not trapped in the subtleties of inertia. He was not apathetic, inactive, or unwilling to extend His hands and words of grace. He merely listened for His Father to speak, and then He responded. There were times that He spit on the ground, and there were times when He wrote in the dirt. What was Jesus doing? He was liberating people from their rigid and imaginary viewpoints of a distant and disconnected God. He led people into green pastures and beside still waters to give them a sense of safety and awaken them to an inspiring vision. Jesus was unveiling the portrait of His Daddy. And, He was demonstrating that His Father wanted an up close and personal relationship with all humanity.

The root system of condemnation grows through the mixing together of the old and new covenants. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins” (Mark 2:21-22).

Living the Christian life is not done through two men and a truck; it’s done through one man and a cross. The life of the believer doesn’t have to be complicated, condemning, or exhausting. It only becomes this way when we attempt to portray ourselves as a hero, a Nero, or a zero. It’s in Christ that we live, and move, and have our being. We have crossed the Kidron Valley and we have arrived safely on the other side.

Given the choice, I prefer the breadcrumbs of grace over an entire loaf of law. Have you ever noticed that when it comes to legalism and the law, that so much of the church is like that 1972 television commercial “Leggo my Eggo?” They simply do not want to leggo of the erroneous doctrine they’ve been programmed with and forsake the hybrid gospel. Is it pride? Is it fear? Is it embarrassment? It is the climate of satisfaction at work? Perhaps their too sophisticated. Or could their reservation be coming from the thought of starting over? A gospel that adds even a thimble of law to an ocean of grace is an imposter gospel.

The hybrid gospel is the most obscure and cunning thief of the believer’s rest. The word “forsaking” means to leave someone or something behind, and the word “gospel” means good news. Forsaking the gospel means to leave behind the good news. Unfortunately, that’s what much of the church has done with the good news; they have left it behind.

Many treat grace like Christmas decorations; bringing them out during a particular season, and then marginalizing them to their storage containers for the lions share portion of the year. Grace is not only the way to life, but grace is also the way through life. Grace is for every moment of life. And this is the message that I believe the church is awakening to.
